In Kay Mellor's hit stage play A Passionate Woman much of the action takes place on a rooftop set. After translation to TV and cinema screen a full twenty minutes of drama unfolds in a difficult and dangerous location. To ease the difficulties Rollem Productions turned to Space Digital for a practical VFX solution.

Production Designer Grant Montgomery, drew up plans for a fake rooftop meticulously modelled on a real location. Space VFX supervisor Matt Wood had the set surrounded by greenscreen for action and dialogue shots and also supervised background plate photography at the real location.

In post Space completed over 130 shots, matching difficult 16mm grain and film weave, to create invisible composites throughout several emotional scenes. Additionally some background plates were built up of multiple elements shot on different days, such as roads, vehicles and background artists. The final scene also features CGI and digitally enhanced hot air balloons.

A 2x90 minute version airs on BBC One and a feature length version will be distributed to cinemas internationally.
