Space Digital concludes its VFX slate for 2009 with the wartime drama Small Island. Based on Andrea Levy's award-winning story of Jamaicans and Londoners involved in World War Two, the BBC adaptation features many scenes in locations difficult to recreate traditionally.

For the 2x90 minute mini-series VFX artists worked over 70 shots, creating several environments including Blitz damaged streets and an authentic period Battersea Powerstation. Despite the very tight budget, several Belfast locations where digitally altered to suit the London setting, including in one case adding an entire Buckingham Palace.

A key establishing shot for both episodes was a wide view of the wartime capital. Space artists used a combination of photographs, painted elements and 3D modelling & animation to create the scene at both dawn and late night.

Other additions include a fly-over by a Lancaster bomber, gunfire effects, additional rain, lightning, and searchlights.
