Space Digital have concluded another busy year of VFX and post production with contributions to the 2011 Christmas Day Episode of Doctor Who.

For the episode entitled The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe, Space Digital artists contributed dozens of VFX shots, many of which might not be immediately apparent to the casual viewer.

Speaking about the collaboration Space Digital VFX supervisor Matt Wood said, 'Just like any film or TV episode, Doctor Who uses digital effects to help the story along or ease the filming process, without distracting the viewer. For example, at the emotional climax of the episode we replaced the skyline of one earthbound scene to make it appear to have been shot in a different earthbound location at a different time of year. While technically this is just the same as painting in an alien landscape, it can be more difficult because the audience will be far more aware of subtle mismatches in tone and lighting. If they're distracted by something looking unexpectedly strange, the whole scene could be ruined.'

The full list of 39 effects includes icy, rainy and dusty windows, glowing Christmas presents, magical portals, damaged lawns, smoking engines and dancing chairs. The shots were completed in a schedule of less than one week by Space Digital artists using NukeX for 3D camera tracking and compositing, Photoshop for matte painting, and Space Digital's in-house system for project management.

The special episode aired on Christmas Day, 2011, on BBC One.

Space Digital begins 2012 with a range of post-production projects including VFX for three BBC and BSkyB drama series.
